Find a local builder who is well known and experienced, ask for references and to tour one of their past projects. Make sure you are compatible and get along well! It is very important you build a good relationship with your contractor before you sign any contracts.


Common mistakes when hiring a custom home builder

Choosing the cheapest or fastest guy, this is always a red flag, in the custom home world cheapest is never best. If a contractor is significantly cheaper than others, their quality and customer service will probably be sub-par. Not building a good foundational relationship with your contractor before hiring them. It is important you get along well with your contractor and see eye to eye on things. If everyone gets along well the build we be much smoother and everyone happy!


What is the first step in building a custom home?

The First step in building a custom home is finding an architect, a set of plans you love, and then a custom home builder to take what’s on paper and apply it on the ground. First surveying, and site-work, then foundation and framing.


How long does a custom home take to build?

There are a lot of variables when it comes to time frame on custom builds, such as, size, complexity, product and contractor availability, price etc. On average a custom home 3000-5000sqft will take about 5-10 months.


How can I make my custom home energy efficient?

Energy efficiency is very important when it comes to a custom home. In Washington state there are minimum energy credits you must receive in order to be approved to build. The best ways to receive these credits and make for a more efficient home are. 1: Skinning the outside of your house in insulation, this provides a full thermal break. 2: Better insulation, such as closed cell spray foam or sips panels, the more insulation you have the less it takes to heat and cool your home. 3: Triple-pane windows this adds a 3rd layer a UV protection from the baking sun. The windows are the weakest link in a properly built home, going with triple pane add a large advantage.
